Preferred Investment Situations
Our investment strategy is to target “transition transactions”, management buyouts and management buyins. We primarily invest as a majority or controlling equity holder in such investments and focus on niche opportunities where the company has a significant market presence and a defensible business model. Typically, we bring the first “institutional capital” to these companies and provide a significant liquidity event for the founders or prior owners. In most cases, we require the prior owners to continue to participate in the portfolio company through employment and consulting arrangements, as minority equity owners, as landlords, or through the issuance of seller notes. We believe the prior owner’s continued involvement and leadership often can add significant value to portfolio companies and ultimately result in great returns for the company.
Many of our management partners do not have significant experience in strategic visioning, budgeting, forecasting, cost/benefit analysis of capital expenditures, board oversight, financing and management augmentation, prior to acquisition by Monument. We provide these competencies to our companies and serve as a trusted resource for our management teams. Monument views itself as the owner of its portfolio companies – not just an investor.
We look for opportunities to deliver above-market returns through investments in historically profitable, defensible companies with good growth potential. Utilizing the operating and investing expertise of Monument’s management team, we identify attractive investment opportunities throughout the Midwest in service, distribution and manufacturing companies primarily with market capitalizations of less than $20 million.
