Monument looks to invest in situations requiring less than $5 million in capital. Although Monument believes there is competition for equity investments of less than $10 million, many of the equity funds in the major metropolitan areas on the East and West Coasts tend to seek larger investments that are sourced from intermediaries. Many buyout funds have increased their minimum investment size, thereby abandoning attractive opportunities in the lower middle market, particularly in Indiana and the Midwest. The market for equity investments in smaller companies, which MCP targets, is less efficient and less competitive which translates into superior risk-adjusted rates of return for investors in MCP.
